Mary explains that The Curtis Book as been a mass of complications. Mr. Scribner has deferred it from time to time. He would like to strenghten the series. She continues about see The Chavalier with Mrs. Cable. Mary continues about Mr. Curtis's comments on the series.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
